During March Break this year I visited the ROM with my two boys now 8 and 11 years old. The ride down on the subway from Finch station was an adventure all by itself for the boys, it's been awhile since we headed into the city without our usual four wheels.
March Break was a very busy time at the museum, it was great to see so many enthusiastic kids bouncing around the MAYA activities and special events on the main floor. There was a buzz of excitement all around, entertainers, crafts, puzzles and loads more to keep younger minds engaged and busy.
The boys had a pretty long list of 'must sees'. First on the list was the special MAYA: Secrets of their Ancient World exhibit. The MAYA exhibit has been receiving alot of publicity so naturally I was interested in seeing what it was all about. The exhibit is actually quite large, it features many artifacts - carvings, pottery, jewellery, masks and incredible ceremonial pieces as well as explanatory videos throughout. My 11 year old was captivated by the carvings on the items, the ancient Mayan designs have an almost modern styling that are really beautiful, or in other words 'cool'. My eight year old was very interested in knowing all about the tablets and symbols they used. My personal favourite was the mask of the Red Queen, made from over 1100 pieces of malachite, bone and shells entirely reconstructed by some very patient archaeologists.
The items in this exhibit are really old - some of the pieces are dated to 250 CE, being so close to this kind of history seemed almost mind boggling for the boys. It really is difficult for us to visualize this kind of time span, and the condition of the items in MAYA are truly amazing. It's such an interesting culture that we hear so little about, I think we all took away from it a certain sense of 'awe'. You can download the Family Adventure Trail and Graphic Novel booklets in pdf format from the ROM website or pick them up when you arrive at the museum.
Talking about hard to visualize time spans, my 8 year old was itching to see the dinosaurs in the Micheal-Lee Chin Crystal. We visited this exhibit when it first opened in 2008, and it's still an incredible sight - for those of you who have not yet been you owe yourself a trip. We all love the Prehistoric Sea Turtle that hangs from the ceiling, also the Barosaurus at 90 feet long, is spectacular - standing beside this giant really gives one a perspective of what the massive proportions of this prehistoric world must have been like. So many creatures are included from the smallest (or giant!) insect up to the the woolly mammoth and other massive dinosaurs including the monstrous Tyranosaurus rex that tower over you as you walk through, always a hit with the kids!
We also made visits to the Mammal Gallery, Bat Cave, Bird Gallery, studied Butterflies and learned loads about the ROMs resident bees from an enthusiastic volunteer. By request we made time to visit Greece, Rome and Japan. Not too much looking at the statues and pottery here though, the boys had a main objective - armour and weaponry. I actually learned loads, as my 11 year old explained the history and evolution of Roman Armour to me along the way. The Samurai costumes and weapons were especially popular with them as well.
Visit the Royal Ontario Museum website for more info and family friendly events. The MAYA: Secrets of their Ancient World exhibit closes April 9. Plus, don't miss Ultimate Dinosaurs: Giants from Gondwana coming this June!

Disney on Ice - Dare to Dream
Written by local mom, Lynnsey Griffiths
Mickey & Minnie were fabulous as the hosts of the event, introducing each storyline and interacting with the crowd by giving clues to which Disney Princess was up next.
The Princess & the Frog was short and sweet. The animal costumes were fabulous in this skit and the jazz music had my feet tapping! Cinderella was up next and did not disappoint, and all the kids were singing along to Bibbity-Bobbity-Boo!
A little surprise happened during the grand finale when a few more of the Disney Princesses showed up to make a little guest appearance which had all the little girls excited!
I left the show with two very happy little girls wearing their Rapunzel hair purchased from the Disney booth! Another Disney on Ice show will definitely be in our future!

Disney On Ice: A Magical Family Outing
The show was an anthology telling the stories of many of the classic Disney movies in song, figure skating and occasional acrobatics. From Aladdin, The Lion King, Toy Story, Sleeping Beauty to Beauty and The Beast, the show covered most of the classic Disney stories. Each story was given a 5 to 10 minute number, where dialog and music from the original were reenacted by the performers through ice dance.
One of the most impressive elements of the show was the costuming. It looks like there was no expense spared by the producers of the show in creating or purchasing the costumes for the performers. The character costumes such as Mickey, Donald and Chip and Dale are as authentic and detailed as the ones you see down in the real Magic Kingdom, except the performers are probably a lot more comfortable than they are in the hundred degree temperatures of central Florida!
The princess costumes were absolutely stunning as well, Amanda loved them and had no trouble identifying each of the Disney characters as they appeared, often saying their names and laughing or getting excited.
Lighting and staging was done well, with bubbles, smoke, fireworks and a giant whale that we all thought was neat. If you have smaller children, you don't have to worry about the fireworks, as they were definitely a toned down variety. Although Amanda loves loud fireworks (you could set a bomb off beside that girl and she'd laugh) I understand that many young children don't, Ben didn't at 5, and I appreciate that the fireworks were appropriate for families with younger kids.
So how did the kids fare?
Amanda was absolutely mesmerized throughout the entire production, she loved every moment and was actually still through the show. My 10 year old, Ben on the other hand, got a little restless. I found myself having to make jokes, or point out things we could laugh at to keep him involved and having a good time. This event is really not aimed at 10 year old boys, but in the end he did say he enjoyed the outing.
One important criticism. This event can get costly very quickly. I fully expect the concessions to be expensive, but the prices at the Rogers Center are over the top, I don't mind paying movie theater prices for popcorn, I expect it, but eight dollars for popcorn and twelve for cotton candy, is too much for the average family budget. If you're one of those families who try to avoid buying toys at events such as this, the incessant peddling of branded merchandise takes a bit of the shine off of an otherwise happy family outing.
So would I recommend this to families?
It was an enjoyable show for all of us, so I would recommend it, but factor in a budget for extras, or prep your kids in advance so they no what NOT to expect from you. If you're a fan of Disney's style of music, and musical theater in general you're sure to enjoy this show!

Social Painting for KIDS!
I have a creative disposition, I'm drawn to anything colourful, quirky or artsy. So when I heard about the paintlounge, a new social painting café in Markham I was naturally interested. Art class and café wrapped into one - how could that not be fun?
You’ve taken the kids bowling, tobogganing, to the movies, indoor playgrounds, glow in the dark golf, laser shoot-outs - hey I know – we’re all running out of ideas once our kids hit six or seven! So the paintlounge not only sounded like a really neat concept, it had the makings a new, original, and creative outing for the kids, and to top it off it’s right here in Markham. So over the winter break I gathered together a gang of four creative kids and took them with me to check it out.

Our group consisted of myself, my two sons and two girls – ages ranging between 6 and 12 years. Everyone was given an apron to wear - essential attire for all of us! The paint 'buffet' was pointed out to us - acrylic paints are set out in pump bottles, pots are filled with an assortment of brushes, along with other materials you might want to experiment with - there was lots of freedom to use whatever we wanted.
Each of us had our own, very different ideas of what we wanted to paint – half the fun was observing and commenting on each others pieces as they came to life. I think the kids would have been happy to spend another 2 or 3 hours just painting endlessly. As it happened we had decided to do one 18" x18" canvas each, which took about 45 minutes to an hour to complete. While our canvases dried the kids enjoyed a fresh lemonade from the cafe and doodled at the tables while discussing the art on the walls and in the cool art books on the tables.
It was a really positive experience for all of us, my kids are asking if we can go back again. They have their artwork proudly displayed in their bedrooms, but have already started planning their next masterpieces.
The café serves loose-leaf teas, french-pressed coffees, and fresh baked treats. They often host events and feature special discounts, along with mom & tot sessions and family days. If your interested in checking it out, I recommend getting signed up to their enews to get the latest on what they are up to.

March Break 24/7
It's looming for me – March Break 24/7 – with my 2 crazy, high energy boys – they are best friends and mortal enemies all wrapped into one!
For a self-employed, single mom I find spring break an immense challenge each year. I should look forward to it, and in a lot of big ways I do – quality time with my boys, no rushing to school in the mornings, no lunches to pack, no squeezing in afterschool homework and playdates. But if I'm totally honest with myself, I feel a real sense of anxiety that sits uncomfortably in the pit of my stomach. It's flash backs of summer holiday, and the loss of the 'me' time that keeps me sane. So this year I am determined to be more organised and prepared for the week of mayhem that is sure to come.
Here is my 3 step 'process' to saving my life next week (I'll let you know later if it works!)
Lot's to Do
If you're looking for something to do with the kiddies next week, there certainly is no lack of entertainment out there. Check the Child's Life March Break Guide for loads of events in York Region, Durham and Toronto.
Hey it's only 7 days, and I may get some work squeezed in, I think I might actually be looking forward to March Break this year!
Got any great ideas for March Break fun? Post a comment, I would love to hear from you.

Here is my 3 step 'process' to saving my life next week (I'll let you know later if it works!)
Step 1: Plan and Schedule! I’ve almost finished planning our week. We started by making a list on the fridge of what the boys each want to do during their break. Next, scribbles on the calender, when we can fit things in, and what we can afford to do. We'll hit the zoo, check out a movie, do the Syrup Festival, but the 'scribbles' also include the quiet time they love at home (please let it be quiet!), bike riding in the park, or going swimming at the local pool.
Step 2: Free Childcare! Playdates, visit the Grandparents, Daddy day, Aunts and Uncles. Anyone they spend some time with to give Mom a fighting chance at keeping on top of the workload is a good thing (no I cannot take a week off work and still pay my bills!). Thank you to all who have offered up their time for this noble cause! I LOVE you!
Step 3: Jump Around! I'm trying to exercise everyday right now, and for as long as I can manage before the kids take over all my free time. I don't know about you, but if I don't give myself a real workout every couple of days I just can't cope, it's my natural Happy Pill that helps me smile and remain calm through the fighting and whining. I highly recommend it – year round!

In the spirit of spring and upcoming Earth Day (April 22), why not plant a tree of your own? You can attend one of many tree plantings with your friends and children, or even plant a tree on your own property. Every tree counts, in fact, the Town has set up an online registration page so you can include your tree in the grand tally.
